In this body of work Katha Seidman explores how the ever-changing movement of air and light over the surface of water inspires imaginary journeys.  Sometimes she paints reflections of an autumn sky in the glassy-smooth surface of a pond to find stones floating in clouds.  In another painting, bas-relief waves break over a surprisingly unearthly rocky shore.

Besides exposing worlds beyond or beneath the surface, Seidman juxtaposes the real with the illusionary by cutting holes or using zippers to expose regions beyond the surface.  Painting over shallow plaster bas-relief further unfolds the three-dimenstional illusion. By layering collage and painted elements Seidman enhances the narrative mystery contained within the piece.
